Making Ireland's most beautiful trails accessible to every generation

16 Years Guiding Seniors Through Ireland's Landscapes

Síle's journey into senior outdoor activities began after completing her Exercise and Health Sciences degree at University College Dublin in 2008. What started as weekend walking groups at a local community centre evolved into her current role developing accessible trail guides for older adults across the northwest. She's worked directly with physiotherapists and trail authorities to create hiking experiences that don't compromise on safety or scenery.

Over the past 16 years, she's personally walked every route she recommends — at least a dozen times each. She documents gradient changes, surface conditions, rest points, and water access. This obsessive attention to detail has helped over 2,400 seniors discover accessible walking routes. Her particular passion? Proving that age isn't a barrier to places like Slieve League.

"Age isn't a barrier to accessing Ireland's most dramatic landscapes. It's just a different starting point. Once you've felt that Atlantic wind at the top of Slieve League, you understand why we're passionate about making these places accessible to everyone."

Her Approach

Síle doesn't believe in dumbing down outdoor experiences. Instead, she designs progressions. A senior who's never hiked before might start with a gentle 2-kilometre coastal walk. After a few weeks, they're ready for a 5-kilometre trail with elevation. Within months, they're on Slieve League.

She works with physiotherapists to understand individual limitations, and with trail authorities to understand exactly what each route demands. That overlap — between human capability and landscape reality — is where her guides live. It's why they work.

The real magic happens when a 68-year-old who hasn't walked anywhere in a decade reaches a viewpoint and realises they're capable of more than they thought. That's what drives her work.
